Esta planta crece en los bosques ecuatoriales del Gab\u00f3n y otros pa\u00edses centro africanos. \u00cbs utilizada tradicionalmente por diversas tribus africanas, sobretodo dentro del ritual Bwiti, originario de los Mitsogo del Gab\u00f3n central y los Fang del norte del Gab\u00f3n i el Camer\u00fa, donde esta pr\u00e1ctica desarrolla un rito de iniciaci\u00f3n que permite al hombre escapar de la materia i ser un banzi. Aquel que ha eclosionado, que saliendo del cascar\u00f3n se ha liberado i ha huido de la materia.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->En 1962, un adicto a la hero\u00edna llamado Howard Lotsof, la tom\u00f3 en busca de \u201cnuevas alturas\u201d. La experiencia alucinatoria dur\u00f3 36 horas, descubriendo que ya no tenia necesidad compulsiva de consumir hero\u00edna. Lo m\u00e1s sorprendente fue la perdida de s\u00edntomas de abstinencia asociados a la drogadicci\u00f3n.
